Scott's Fish Room

Latest Updates

(03/31/24) Cleaned all the sponge filters and did water changes on all the tanks. Added more Tiger Barbs, Zebras, and Neons. Just ordered 3 new Fluval heaters to replace 3 tetra heaters that just stopped working.

(03/19/24) I don't remember when I first put my fish room online, but I started it on Geocities. I registered "scottsfishroom.com" in Feb 2003 and started running it on one of my servers. It has been online ever since. The site is 21 years old.

(03/17/24) I have updated the entire site, all new pictures. I am still working on the site but at least it is updated.

(03/14/24) I will be updating the entire site soon, I just got SSL working for the site.

(02/23/24) Going to the Motor City fish auction tomorrow. Well after a year of running Whisper filters again I have decided to switch to sponge filters. The cost of the media for the Whisper filters has gone up and I don't think they are worth it. Fish stores use sponge filters so I figured I would give them a try. I will be putting the nice acrylic lids back on.

(02/27/23) I went to the Motor City fish auction and people bid stuff up past retail prices. I only got some blue Guppies and some Endlers. I will be going to a different acution at the end of next month. Hope it turns out better. I am in the proces of replacing all the lids on my tanks with polycarbonate lids. I purchased 2 4x8 sheets at Menards and Amber helped me cut them to size. I still have some to install but the project is mostly done. I did this because I am replacing all the box filters with Whisper power filters. (I used them in the past but switched to air driven box filters to save money) I have found that the box filters add hours to the maintance process and while the filter pads are more money I would rather save time. I think I have 4 more tanks left to switch to the Whisper filters.

(02/07/23) I will be going to the Motor City fish auction on the 25th.

(10/28/22) I am working on the website, I have updated the main page. I still have work to do. I will be going to a fish auction on 11/12

(10/29/21) A lot has happened since I last updated this site. I worked from home durning most of the Pandemic and had a lot of time to work on the tanks. The problem was that I had a crappy job and did not have any extra money to spend. My wife lost her job do to Covid cutbacks so we had to watch the spending. That has all changed, we both have good jobs now. I switched all the filters to air driven, replace almost all the heaters with new ones. I setup a 35 Gallon Hex tank in the livingroom for Fred (A really cool Flowerhorn). I will post new pictures soon.

09/25/19) I have restored the web page and updated everything.

09/25/19) My file server was attacked with the Kronos ransomware trojan. I did not have a current backup of the website. The backup was from 2017 and I am in the process of updating the site. (No way I was going to pay a ransom)

03/3/17) I replaced the filter cartridges on all the tanks today. Cleaned all the glass and pruned the Val Grass in tank #2. I setup tank #15 to put the extra Val Grass in. I added new pictures of all the tanks. Everything is doing well.

02/13/17) The Black Mollies had babies again and they are doing well. The heater on the guppy tank got stuck again. I contacted Pet Mountian and they are sending replacement heaters for the ones that went bad.

02/7/17) The "New" Hagen heater triped the circuit breaker on the heater circuit. I did not notice if for a few hours. At the time I did not know what the problem was so I turned the breaker back on and the heater blew apart and the magic smoke came out. Replaced it with a spare. Also replaced the heater in the Turtle tank as the old one could not keep the take hot enough.

01/22/17) I added more Gold dust mollies, Orange mollies, cory cats, white mollies, and more black mollies. I re-filled tank #11 for the orange mollies. The val grass in tank #1 and tank #3 is greening up nicely.

01/16/17) I contacted Pet Supplies Plus over some heaters that got water inside of them. While I can't prove when I got them. They offered me a $50 gift card for my trouble. They also asked for the numbers on the heaters to look into the failure. I am impressed and wanted to share this. They stand behind their products. I recommend them.

01/15/17) Updated the site, new pictures. Fancy Guppies had babies last week and they are growing nicely. Everything is doing well.

01/13/17) Well, it has been a long time since I did any updates. I have done a lot of work to get all my tanks in top shape. I have removed all the plastic plants and bought live plants for all of the freash water tanks. I have replaced all the heaters with old school hang on the tank heaters, I got tired of water getting into the "modern" heaters. Replaced all the lighting with LED's. Replaced the air pumps twice. I will update all the picture later this weekend (If I have time)

01/06/15) I ordered a 2nd 02 Elemental air pump and a pressure gauge

10/17/14) PetSmart had a $1.00 sale. $85 later I have a bunch of new fish. I will be updating the pictures soon

(09/06/14) I have done a lot of changes but I have not done much to update the website in a while. I have been trying different filters. I tried box filters that worked ok but are a pain to do maintance on. I found some vintage external air driven filters but they turned out to be too small. So I just bought new Tetra whisper 20 filters for the small tanks and whisper 60 filters for the big tanks. I found instructions on youtube on how to make filter cartridges cheap and easy so this should work out well. I have upgraded the moonlight system and it looks great but one of the posts on the power supply melted. I will be fixing it soon. I bought a new 952 gph air pump, it has great pressure as well as volumn and it only uses 40 watts.

(04/02/14) I have been busy and I have not updated the site since last fall. I Switched the lights back to the linear fluorescent because the new setup was not working out. I have an 8 camera server setup with cameras looking into the tanks from the sides. Email me if you would like the link and password The moonlights are back and I added new moonlights to the rest of my tanks. Moonlights come on at 9:30 UTC-05:00 and go off at 11:00 UTC-05:00 I just added 25 new Tiger Barbs, some Cory Cats, Neon's, Tetra's and some Mollie's.
I will update the pictures soon

(09/14/13) Added 4 Siamese fighting fish today. 2 male and 2 female. I am housing them in the new breeder boxes I recently bought. Since I re-did the lighting fixtures, I don't have moonlighting any more. They were built into the fluorescent fixtures. I am going to work on moving them to the new fixtures.

(09/11/13) I have added a lot of new fish lately. I have converted all the lighting to use CFL's I am using 12w Daylight bulbs. Cut the electric usage in half over the old fluorescent setup.

(08/15/13) Updated the web site with new pictures. Fixed broken links. More updates to come.

(08/10/13) Working on updating the web site. Got 31 new fish last week. Got a great deal on some corner filters, going to use them in all my smaller tanks. Very cost effective filters.

(01/04/13) I have updated most of the pictures and broken links.

(01/01/13) A lot has changed, the web site is out of date. I had done updates last November but the hard drive failed and I did not have a backup. I lost all the updates. I will be updating the web site soon.

(05/28/11) Added some Tiger Barbs to the aggressive tank, got some free baby mollies to replace the black guppies that did not make it. Got a free 20 gallon deep tank and set it up for fancy goldfish. I have taken pictures, I just need to get time to update the site.

(04/21/11) Added a cool cat fish to the community tank. Also added a Blue Gourmi, some Barbs, and a few Guppies. I will update the pictures soon.

(03/31/11) The ballast on the salt tank died yesterday. I have replaced it. I added another 10 gallon tank and some tank dividers. I will add some pictures when I get some time.

(03/23/11) I added a Snow Flake Eel, 2 Tomato Clowns, and a crab to tank #2, I also added 2 Damsels to tank #5

(03/11/11) Fancy Guppies had babies, they are doing well. I got the pipe system done, I can fill the tanks from the RO system by a valve over each tank. Finished the air monitor system, it will automatically switch to a backup air pump if the main one fails. Live plants are doing well. I re-did the web site a bit. I removed the menu table from each page, just use your back button.

(03/04/11) I got a deal on a yellow tang the other day. I built an automatic switch that monitors the air pressure for the tanks. If the primary pump should fail, the switch will turn on the backup air pump. I have added live plants to some of the tanks.

(02/22/11) I have the reverse osmosis system working now. I installed the new ballast and bulb for the UV sterilizer. Re-did the salt tank (Filled it back up with RO water), it looks great. Re-started all of the ten gallon tanks. I am going to switch back to live plants again. I am going to try to get the tanks looking like they did years ago.

(01/26/11) It has been a long time since the last update. In the last year, I added a UV Sterilizer to the salt tank. 2 bulbs have burned out, one only lasting a month. I ordered a replacement ballast along with a new bulb. I got a reverse osmosis system from my dad. I just got it installed but I need to replace the filters. I also want to get a big holding tank for the processed water. I had some problems with the heaters in the aggressive tank. I added some fish to the community tank. I shut down all three 10 gallon tanks (last summer) because I had been to busy to really need them. We are done with a big remodel project so now I have more time to work on the tanks.

(11/25/09) I have spent some time working on the tanks. I re-did the salt tank. I have added some new fish as well.

(06/16/09) It has been almost a year since I have updated the site. We have been busy over the last year. We got married last October, went on our honeymoon and then on a vacation. I have not had time to work on the site. Hopefully I will get to update all the pictures.

(08/22/08) I have been working on the site, I have most of it updated. You will notice that the pictures load faster now. The text should be easier to read.

(08/12/08) I have updated most of the site. I still have more work to do. We switched the Guppy tank to African Chiclids. We picked some on last weekend. We also picked up a  very cool blue Damsel for the marine tank and three more barbs and two glass cats for the aggressive tank. While we were at it, we bought two Pink Convicts for one of the ten gallon tanks.

(02/28/08) I just updated all the pictures and pages. I will be adding more pictures in the future but this is all I have time for now.

(01/31/08) It has been a long time since the last update. I have been busy with the house. I have just about finished framing the basement. I have moved the tanks to the new stands. The wiring is just about done. The air lines still need to be done. The new house came with a whole house automatic natural gas powered generator. This was something that I had always wanted to get. As soon as I get some time, I am going to update the pictures and information on the other pages.

(08/01/07) I removed the old pictures and just put up a few new ones for now. Most of the site had been updated now.

(07/31/07) I think the softened water is causing my plants to have problems. I am going to have to use un-softened water for the tanks. Everything looks good. I have not had time to go find new fish stores so nothing much has changed with the tanks.

(06/04/07) The Fancy Guppies had a bunch of babies. One of the impellers on the Guppy tank went bad, I fixed it. I setup the 50 gallon salt tank again. We worked out the design for the basement yesterday. The tanks will be built into the wall as before, but this time they will all be in the same wall. I have to find some good fish stores to shop at, I moved too far from all the old ones. I would like to get more Guppies and maybe something else to add the the Tiger Barb tank.

(05/25/07) I Moved last month and I have not had time to really do much with the tanks. I built new stands and set up both of the fresh water tanks, I put all the salt water fish into a ten gallon tank for now. I need to finish the basement. We are going to build the tanks into the walls again. I will update the web site when I get time. I am still unpacking from the move.

(03/20/07) All of the tanks are looking good, I am in the process of finding a new house and I have not had time to do updates. I still plan on having the tanks built into the wall at the new house. I am not going to add anything new to the tanks because it will be hard enough to move what I already have. Just a little note on the why I am moving: I live in Redford Township Mi, less then a mile from Detroit. When I moved here in 1998, it was not a bad place to live. Since that time, the neighborhood has really gone down. One of my Neighbors grows pot and runs a drug house. The Redford Police don't seem to care about drug offenses. B&E's are a big problem. So I am moving out of Wayne County. I am willing to pay more to live in a better area where the police do more then write traffic tickets.

(12/20/06) I just updated the site, all new pictures!

(11/16/06) I have started to work on my tanks again. I replaced one of the lights on the salt tank, and one of the filters needs a new impeller. I converted the community tank to a fancy Guppy tank and I added some new fish. I also added more Tiger barbs to the aggressive tank. I got a new camera and I will be taking new pictures soon.

(08/01/06) This is the first update in six months, I have slacked on my tanks so far this year. Everything is alive and well, but I need to work on them to get them back up to my usual standard. I bought a Diesel power generator that will run my entire house, so i don't have to worry about power outages any more. I am going to take new pictures soon. I need to clean the filters and replace the light bulbs.

(01/22/06) I did water changes on all my tanks. I also put some of the rocks back in the salt tank. I was given a Bat fish for the salt tank. All of the tanks look great again. I will try and get some new pictures and get the web cam going again.

(01/03/06) Happy New Year, I cleaned out the salt tank the other day. I have re-filled the tank and I am just letting the filters run for now. I had a light fixture die today. The ballast smelled burnt. I bought a replacement ballast and swapped it out. (This was one of the $7 electronic ballast shop lights from the big orange box, Installed it in 12/02)  For now, I have what was still alive in the salt tank in a 10 gallon until the 50 gallon cycles.

(12/19/05)  I had someone request that I put the old pictures of my site back online, I have done this. See the link on the index page. . I am going to try and fix the web came again.

(10/7/05) Well, I have been slacking. I did water changes on both fresh water tanks. The salt tank needs to be cleaned out and re-done. I am going to work on the salt tank in a few weeks.

(4/3/05) I sold all my extra tanks to Fantastic Fins yesterday. I also gave them my Trigger since he would not play nice with others. I replaced the bulbs on the salt tank, it looks so much better now. I am going to do work on the tanks today while I watch the race today. Hopefully I will be able to add new pictures later tonight. The moonlight setup has been running for 2 weeks now with no problems!

(03/28/05) I changed out the camera and got the web cam working again. I am still running the same software, but I tweaked a few settings I also changed the video size to 640 X 480. I am looking for a better camera that will show off the moonlights better.

(03/27/05) I finished installing the new moonlights, they look great. I am going to try and have the live web cam online later this week so that you can see the moonlights in action. Visit the moonlight page to see some pictures. I shut down the guppy tanks the other day. All of the fish are doing well. I still have to take the trigger to Fantastic Fins along with all the tanks that I am not going to use any more. Now that I am back to work, I have all kinds of ideas and no time to work on them.

(03/13/05) I shut down another tank, I have to take my Niger Trigger back to the store before I can shut done the last of the 10 gallon salt tanks. I should be able to shut down the last two 10 gallon tanks this week. I had plans to get this all done this weekend, but I have a bad cold and just don't have any energy to do anything. Once I have time, I am going to re-take all the pictures and update the entire site.

(03/01/05) I have cut back on my tanks, I guess I can't call it a fish room any more. This was something that I have been thinking of doing for some time now. The problem has been my electric bill. My fish room used about 800KW each of the last three months. This is because the heaters are running all the time because it has been so cold. And since natural gas is so expensive, I have cut back on how warm I keep the house. I would like to start saving a little money, and having a $200+ electric bill every month and a $200 gas bill is not helping. So what I did: I am still running seven tanks, I shut down 3 50's, a 20, and a 10 gallon. I plan to shut down four more 10 gallon tanks and just run the three 50's that are built into the wall.

(01/20/05) I had a power outage yesterday morning, it only lasted for thirty seconds or so but two of my whisper filters did not re-start. I guess it is time to take them a part and clean the impeller and impeller well. I was just happy that the power came right back on, I was not looking forward to cranking up the generator then fueling it all day.

(01/17/05) The fish are all doing well, I have been busy with the holidays and have not had time to do any updating. I have taken the live web cam offline for now. The software I use is running the server out of virtual memory. This causes it to get very slow, since it also runs Unreal 2004, FTP, and the backup for my main web server, I can't have it doing that. I will put it back online when I have time to install a better web cam program. The new guppies I bought in November had babies, I got about twelve of them and they are all doing well. I have had some problems with heaters, 2 of my newer (Less then a year old) Ebo Jager heaters have water in them. I bought them because they were top of the line, but they did not last any longer then  other brands that I have tried.

(11/16/04)I have updated all the pages with new pictures. I will be adding more pictures to all of the extra pages soon. I went to Pet Supplies Plus today to get feeders, they had a nice selection of Guppies so I picked up a few. I removed the drift wood from tank 16 and cleaned the glass on all the tanks.

(11/15/04)Many things have changed, and I have not had time to update this site. I never did get to re-do the site so I  will just start updating it as is. The Pacu's are really too large for the 50 gallon tank that I have them it. They splash water all over the place and they have destroyed two heaters. I don't have the funds for a larger tank at this time so I am going to take the drift wood out to give them more room. I am a little behind on maintenance, so I will not be adding any pictures today. I went to the store the other day and picked up some new fish. I will take pictures soon. All the fish are doing well. The motor on my Magnum 330 died, I replaced it with a HOT Magnum I got on eBay. I also replaced the Skilter on tank 3, it started leaking again.

(7/18/04)I did water changes on all the tanks today. I replaced the impeller on tank 9, it came apart and was just making noise. I setup tank 7 to grow duck weed, it gets out of control in the guppy tank.

(6/19/04)I have not updated the web site, because I am in the process of converting it to PHP. I am not happy with the way the site looks now. I have done quite a bit with my tanks over the last few months. The Pacu's have grown quite large, I plan to get a 240 gallon tank later this summer for them. My Tiger Barbs are doing great, no ich! I have added a few things to my Marine tanks. I re-did the moonlight with new 1 watt LED's I can take pictures of it now. I got the alge problem I was having under control. Monday the 14th a Storm brought down the power lines on my street, I had to switch everything over to my generator for about five hours. All the fish did just fine, but it took hours to fix some problems I had with one of my servers after the UPS it is on gave me problems. Almost forgot, the Pacu's chewed though the power cable on the heater, they got it down to the blue and brown wires inside the jacket on the Ebo Jager 200 watt that I had in the tank. I have replaced the heater and placed it so that the cord stays out of the water for the most part. I have lots of new pictures, but I am going to hold off on updaing them until the new site is ready.

(4/25/04)I have been busy and did not get to do any updates this last month. I have replaced the air pump with a new one that uses less power. I picked up some new fish, I will update the pictures soon. I just noticed this morning that I am having problems with the Bala Sharks again. I am done with Bala Sharks. The tanks are all due for filter and water changes. I hope to get them done this week.

(3/29/04) Water changes on all the fresh water tanks, new Tiger Barbs, Bala Sharks, and Pleco's (All in the Quarantine tank). Last weekend I added some new live plants to tank 3,16, and 22. The heater on tank 6 got stuck and killed the Damsel that was in that tank. I replaced that bad heater with a spear old heater, but I will order a new one for the tank before getting new fish. I also noticed that the heater in tank 21 had some water in it. I replaced it with an extra 200 watt Ebo Jager.

(3/20/04) I got my Python, I can't believe that I waited this long to get one. I brought home one of the Pacu's from work and gave the other one to a co-worker. I also cleaned the work tank and did a 10% water change. I added a nice plastic driftwood to the Pacu tank. I also added new live plants to tank 3,18, and 16. I gave the new plants a lime bath to keep from getting snails in my tanks. I moved the new pictus cats into tank 3. I am going to do water changes later today.

(3/15/04) Waiting on a few more new bulbs, and a 50 foot Python. I need to do water changes on the marine tanks.

(3/7/04) I did filter and water changes on all the fresh water tanks. Tank three is cleaned and setup again, I bleached everything. I need to do water changes on the marine tanks, but it is late and I am tired.

(3/6/04) I replaced all the light bulbs the other day with new Zoo Med bulbs, what a difference that made. Maybe I will start replacing bulbs every six months. Big problems with tank three. Last Sunday the fish started showing signs of Ich, I turned the heat up to eighty five degrees but they kept getting worst. Just about everything was dead by Thursday. This is the third time I have had this problem with this tank. I have decided to take it down and bleach everything. My boss and I think that the algae eater is a carrier because he never gets sick and is the only original fish left. I hope to have the tank back together this weekend. We added a HOT Magnum to our work tank, the tank has finally cycled and everything is doing well. I moved the Pacu's from tank 18 to tank 16 (The new 50 gallon) They seem to get spooked very easy in the new tank.

(2/23/04) The new 50 Gallon is up and running, I have a pleco in it for cycling. I added 6 Bala Sharks and a Pictus Cat to tank 3. Added a Yellow Tang to tank 2. I am using a different camera for the live web cam, it seems to be working better. I am having algae problems in tank 3 and 20, I am going to order replacement light bulbs in the hope that it helps to fix the problem, water quality has not changed but the algae is growing like crazy. I added a bunch of new pictures of the Pacu's.

(2/19/04) I went to Jan's and got a new 50 gallon tank for the Pacu's. This tank will replace tanks 16 & 18. I had to re-work the stand a little bit to get the 50 gallon to fit, it was built to hold 10 gallon tanks originally. I have made most of the changes, I just need to reinforce the back supports. I plan to have water in it tomorrow night or Saturday. This should do until I can get the really big tank for them by this summer.

(2/18/04) Updated some pictures on the web site. New pictures of the Lion fish (Tank 8) I got some feeder guppies for the Lion fish, he likes them much better then any of the frozen food I have feed him. Changed web cam to view the large Marine tank. I replace the heaters in tanks 1 and 3, I believe that the problem I had with tank 3 was caused by temperature swings and not sick fish. I have not had any problems with any more fish that I have purchased at Jan's so it is likely that it was the heaters.

(2/12/04) I bought a Lion fish for tank 8, replace the shell bottom with a sandy bottom in tank 6, install the Magnum 220 on tank 22. I also did a 80% water change to the work tank and it is doing fine now.

(2/10/04) I bought 12 Tiger Barbs, 3 Sharks, and a Pleco for the Aggressive tank and 12 Neon's and a pleco for the community tank. I moved them into their tanks today I wanted to keep them in quarantine for a few days. I cleaned out the Quick Sand on the Marine tank, the hose had come off and the water was sitting for the last few days. I have it running again. I picked up 2 canister filters on eBay the other day: A Magnum 220 and a Fluval 403. They both work great. If anyone has parts for a Fluval 303, I am looking for some parts. We had an Ich problem at work, but we were able to fix it without loosing a fish. The tank is still a bit cloudy from the ordeal but I did a 50% water change this evening and I hope that will help clear it up.

(2/01/04) I added new backgrounds to all the tanks that had foil backgrounds. I think it looks much better. I set up a new quarantine tank since I had problems with fish from Jan's and lost my Pictus cat and Tiger Barbs in my aggressive tank to some kind of disease. We added fish to the work tank today.

(1/26/04) New 29 Gallon tank at work (See link on main page)

(1/18/04) I went to Jan's today and picked up more Tiger Barbs for the aggressive tank, and a bunch of other community fish for the community tank. I covered the window in my fish room with Styrofoam to block out the light. I was having a problem with Algae on some of the tanks and I hope this will help to keep it from growing on the plants so fast.

(1/17/04) I picked up 2 Pacu's for tank 22 and a aquatic frog for tank 21. Everyone seems to be doing well.

(1/16/04) I cleaned all of the fresh water tanks and topped off the water in the marine tanks. I also update most of the pictures and info on the web site. Road Runner messed up the DNS so my site was not reachable. I have since switched to a different DNS host. I think they do that to keep people from running web pages from home.

(1/13/04) My new Domain name is working, this site is now Scottsfishroom.com. It took me awhile to figure out the settings and then it took even longer for DNS to update the new information. Everything seems to be working, if you notice something wrong, please email me. I replaced the filters in a bunch of the tanks tonight. Replaced the Algone stuff as well. It turns into a gooey mess after awhile.

(01/12/04) Moved website to my own server, I am working on updating things on the backside to make it easier to update the site. I have all of the HTML files fixed to run on the local server, all of the pictures load. I still need to take new pictures and update the information. Look for the new pictures soon. I think this is going to work well, no more Geocities bandwidth limits!

(12/06/03) It has been a long time since I did any updates. I don't have the time for 22 tanks. I shut down 12 tanks. I have 5 50's, 4 10's, and 1 18 running. I had a big snail problem in one of my 50's and I ended up bleaching the whole thing last month. Now that some things have changed and I should have a little more time, I have put more effort into getting the tanks looking good again. All of my Angle fish are doing fine, as are my guppies. My mushrooms are really growing nicely in the big marine. I will be replacing all the light bulbs after Christmas. I will replace all the pictures with current ones as soon as I get a chance.

(02/28/03) Did water changes on everything. I did get some new mollies and sword tails last week. Everything is looking great.
